Beginning of School Info

Mon, 09/07/2020 - 9:51am

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome back! School starts tomorrow and we want to ensure that you have all of the most important information at your fingertips as we begin. Below you will find information about the first day of school, student schedules, Google Meet expectations, Canvas, Family File, text book distribution, and HCPSS Connect. We have also included links to our welcome letter and virtual orientation. I would save these items and refer back to them as they are a wealth of information and will support you throughout the year. It is going to be a great school year!

The FIRST Day of School

School starts for ALL students on Tuesday, September 8 at 9:00am.  Due to the fact that school starts on Tuesday, all students will start on Tuesday, September 8th in PERIOD 1 at 9:00am.  Please use the meeting code sent by your PERIOD 1 teacher through Canvas. Courses were made available in Canvas on Saturday, September 5. We will be running a slightly altered schedule on Tuesday. All students will remain in their second period class for a special BearTime.

Hammond HS Welcome Snapshot

If you haven’t already read our Hammond HS Welcome  please read it today. It contains everything you need to know about staying connected, receiving information, communicating with school, and accessing resources. You may want to print this document and place it with important school information or post it somewhere visible at home.

Hammond HS Orientation

The Semester 1 Orientation introduces or reminds our community of the many resources and people that we have available to support you and your student. When you have a few minutes, click through all of the slides and hear the many supports that we are providing. Also, there is a link for how to chat with the main office (administrators) and student services (counselors, psychologist, PPW). There are also 1 minute videos introducing over 100 of our staff members, so you can pick and choose which staff introductions you would like to hear.

Google Meet Expectations for Students

You might want to print a copy of the daily class schedule and Google meet expectations and attach it to the student's work space at home. Please review school expectations with your child:

  • To ensure academic success and student well-being:
  • Set up a quiet work space without distractions.
  • Turn on the computer's camera, say hello/present in the Chat box, and mute the microphone at the beginning of each class.
  • Keep the microphone muted when not speaking to reduce background noise.
  • Use the chat to ask questions while the teacher or another student is talking.
  • Use the “raise hand” to request the microphone to ask questions.
  • Demonstrate effort, accuracy, and persistence in work as well as ask questions and seek instructional supports when needed.
  • Work to build positive classroom relationships by respecting differences.
  • Behave in a virtual environment in a manner consistent with the expectations when in school.
  • Check the Canvas calendar, announcements, and to-do lists daily to ensure all assignments are complete.

HCPSS Google Meet Expectations for Students and Parents provides a clear overview to help make the virtual school environment accessible and positive for everyone.

Parents and guardians are also asked to review the HCPSS Student and Parent Handbook which includes the Code of Conduct.

THREE Tasks for Students and Parents to Complete NOW

  1. Family File:  Please complete this important annual update as soon as you are able! It only takes about 10 minutes. Login here to get started now.
  2. Canvas Orientation Module: Student and Parent Orientation modules and resources have been uploaded for your review. Canvas will have a new ‘look and feel’ this year. These updates have been made to help standardize how content is presented and organized for student and parent use. Students should review the module prior to the first day of school. Access the module here.
  3. Policies and Procedure Review: This year, the Code of Conduct and Student Handbook will not be provided in hard copy. These reference materials are available for your review online. We are asking students and parents to read this document.

Textbook Distribution -

Wednesday, September 16, 8:00am-3:00pm

We will be distributing textbooks to students on Wednesday, September 16.  More information will be provided next week.  If you still have textbooks to return from last year, we will have a cart set up by the gym entrance of the school this week, Tuesday - Friday from 8:00am-2:00pm.  Please place the items in a bag labeled with your student’s name and drop them off.  Thank you.
